I was in the audience over to the left near the front during this set. Got to the concert on Friday, but only had tickets for Sat and Sun. My friend and I walked up to the fence and a couple of guys sitting on the other side said “Wanna come in?” We said yes and they stood up and pulled open a hole they had cut. We got in for free on that first day. We camped out in the hills behind the fair grounds. Tickets were $6 per DAY in advance and $6.50 at the gate. As I remember Hendrix was booed off the stage during his Friday appearance due to some derogatory comment by Hendrix about the audience. His appearance on Sunday afternoon was an appology jam that was fantastic. I was frying on acid through most of the first night and into Saturday morning. Someone had a boda bag of wine laced with way too much acid. While I was pretty use to the stuff, tripped over 400 times from 1967 through 1972 or there about, the trip at Newport 69 lasted a very long time. My friend freaked out at the art stands in the back of the show. He said “People’s faces were melting.” I followed him, calmed him down, and the rest of the weekend went well. The group that made the biggest impact with the audience was Credence Clearwater Revival on Saturday night. They did not hit the stage until about 1AM as I remember and they were absolutely the best show of the weekend. My friend and I were going to hitch hike to Woodstock the next month, but ended up going to San Diego and Mexico instead. Big mistake of course seeing as how Woodstock turned out. By the way I was born Feb 10, 1952 and had just turned 17 prior to this show with Hendrix.
