Download Music from Your Friends’ iTunes Libraries Over the Internet with Mojo

September 22, 2008

Share any song in your iTunes library and download any song from your friends’ iTunes libraries over the internet with freeware application Mojo (for both Windows and Mac). Essentially, Mojo makes sharing music with your friends through iTunes wildly simple, from its simple interface to its brilliant implementation. I just signed up for it (free) last night and have no connections yet, so I haven’t been able to fully use the program, but post your username once you sign up so the sharing can commence.  Below is a full-on screenshot tour and detailed walk-through and overview of everything Mojo has to offer.

Getting Started

mojo-friends.pngTo get started, you need to download and install Mojo on your computer (it’s fully ready to go on Macs, and currently in beta for Windows). The first time you run Mojo, you’ll be asked to create an account. Do that, then you’ll see the Mojo friends window, which is much like a buddy window on an instant messenger client. Granted, you won’t have any buddies in this window to begin with, but don’t worry, you will.add-friend.pngNext, others need to download and install Mojo as well. They give you their user name, you hit the little plus (+) sign to add them as a buddy, and they’re sent an approval request. They approve you, and voilà—you now have access to every song in their iTunes library. So what now?

Browsing and Downloading Music

To browse your friend’s library, just double-click their entry in the buddy window. Mojo will open a new window which shows every song in their library and their playlists, along with their Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, and Audiobooks. Double-click any song to play it back, and to download a song (or even video), just click the download arrow next to the song or the big download button at the bottom of the screen.
Mojo will download the song and automatically add it to your iTunes library. Additionally, it will even create a playlist in a folder called Mojo containing all the songs you downloaded from that friend.

You may be thinking: Sure, this is impressive, but what else can it do? Well, for one, Mojo automatically detects whether or not you already have a song in your iTunes library. Any song that you’ve already got displays in Mojo in a light gray color. And if your friend has purchased a song from the iTunes Music store, and it’s dripping with nasty DRM—Mojo highlights those tracks in red.

So What’s the Catch?

If you’ve already checked out the Mojo homepage, you may notice that there is a premium version of the application. Luckily for all of the cheapskates out there like me, you really don’t need to buy the premium version to enjoy most of the best features of Mojo. But let’s say you do want to go Pro. Here’s what you get:

  • Unlimited friends
  • Playlist subscriptions

playlist-subscribe.pngAs far as I can tell, that’s it. Playlist subscriptions, which allow you to subscribe to a playlist in your friend’s library, automatically downloads music in the playlist as your friend adds to it. Crazy cool, yes, but if you don’t want to shell out for it, it’s really not that must-have.

Right now, as I said, Mojo is available and ready for primetime on the Mac, and is currently in beta for Windows users. The app takes practically zero know-how to set up and get started with, and everything it does is near perfect. I’ve only tested it on my Mac so far, so if you give the beta a try on Windows, let’s hear how it’s working in the comments. For another detailed usage overview, check out the introduction screencast from Mojo.

What’s on Barack Obama’s iPod?

July 1, 2008

I thought this was a pretty interesting article from CNN. Shows another, rarely seen side to Barack.

barackBob Dylan. Yo-Yo Ma. Sheryl Crow. Jay-Z. These aren’t musical acts in a summer concert series: They’re artists featured on Barack Obama’s iPod.

“I have pretty eclectic tastes,” the Democratic presidential contender said in an interview to be published in Friday’s issue of Rolling Stone.

Growing up in the ’70s, Obama said, he listened to the Rolling Stones, Elton John and Earth, Wind & Fire. Stevie Wonder is his musical hero from the era. The Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” tops his favorites from the band.

The Illinois senator’s playlist contains these musicians, along with about 30 songs from Dylan and the singer’s “Blood on the Tracks” album. Jazz legends Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker are also in the mix.

“Actually, one of my favorites during the political season is ‘Maggie’s Farm,’ ” Obama said of one of Dylan’s tracks. “It speaks to me as I listen to some of the political rhetoric.”

In the song, Dylan sings about trying be himself, “but everybody wants you to be just like them.”

Several musicians on Obama’s iPod support his bid for the White House, including Bruce Springsteen. Earlier this month, Dylan told a British newspaper that he believes Obama is redefining politics in the United States and could deliver change to a nation in upheaval.

“I’ve got to say, having both Dylan and Bruce Springsteen say kind words about you is pretty remarkable,” Obama said. “Those guys are icons.”

Obama said he hasn’t met Springsteen, but the two have talked over the phone.

“Not only do I love Bruce’s music, but I just love him as a person,” Obama said. “He is a guy who has never lost track of his roots, who knows who he is, who has never put on a front.”

And did he address him as the Boss?

“You’ve got to,” the candidate said.

Asked what he thought of rap, Obama said the genre has broken down barriers within the music world, though he’s concerned about his daughters — Malia, 9, and Sasha, 7 — listening to it.

“I am troubled sometimes by the misogyny and materialism of a lot of rap lyrics,” he said, “but I think the genius of the art form has shifted the culture and helped to desegregate music.”

He said hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons and rappers Jay-Z and Ludacris were “great talents and great businessmen.”

“It would be nice if I could have my daughters listen to their music without me worrying that they were getting bad images of themselves,” he added.

Obama appears on the cover of the magazine, which endorsed him for president in March.

Kanye West and Bonnaroo - Not a Match Made in Heaven

June 25, 2008

This was news to me. I didn’t know about the Kanye debacle at Bonnaroo, but I did find his heated response rather amusing - mostly because it was in all CAPS. I also found his claims that Bonnaroo organizers are “FUCKING IDIOTS,” “SQUID BRAINS,” and that they “DON”T HAVE THE CAPACITY TO PUT ON A SHOW PROPERLY” rather humorous.

Apparently, Kanye missed the fact that the organizers of Bonnaroo are probably the main reason for the return of the American popular music festival. They are organizers that have been putting on this event for 7 years and have brought hundreds of thousands of people to a farm in the middle of Tennessee, and done so without a major hitch.

They have had the capacity to put on a proper show for hundreds of other bands throughout the years, why couldn’t they do it for Kanye?

On the other hand, glowsticks should probably only be thrown during Hood (although I don’t think that’s Hood…). Regardless of how ridiculously late a band is delayed.

Anyway, here’s Kanye’s blog post about the incident

Here’s another article about it, and here

Sweet Home Russia?

May 9, 2008

Back in the days of the Soviet Union, the Soviet Red Army had an official choir composed of male soldiers and musicians. It still exists. The Red Army Choir performs throughout Russia to this day.

Now consider the Finnish rock band called The Leningrad Cowboys. A little while ago, they held a concert in Russia, in which - to the screaming applause of Russkie teenagers - they got the Red Army Choir to join them on stage for a performance of “Sweet Home Alabama”, in English.

We’re talking seriously off the wall here. I suggest having a Stoli as you watch it…

My question is where is the “Roll Tide Roll” from the choir?

It’s a lonely afternoon in Asia

May 3, 2008

Apparently, I’m the only one in Asia listening to Panic at the moment (well just PanicStream). It’s a strange sense of pride and loneliness.

That’s a big map.
