Best Setbreak or Post Show Songs?

October 26, 2007

setbreakAfter much discussion weighing the pros and cons of a setbreak DJ, I wonder what setbreak or post show songs make for an optimal intermission / exit. When I say “optimal”, I’m referring to those songs that make everyone stick around for a little and dance, hang out, and sing the songs out loud (you’ve all seen it before and know what I’m referring to.) For me, what comes to mind is Talking Head’s “Burning Down the House”.  What are your favorite setbreak or post show tunes?

Hospital gives man drip-feed of vodka

October 19, 2007

IVDoctors plugged an Italian tourist into a drip-feed of vodka to save him at a hospital in Australia that ran out of the medicinal alcohol it would normally have used for treatment.

The 24-year-old Italian, who was not further identified, was brought to Mackay Base Hospital in northeastern Queesland state and was diagnosed as having ingested a large quantity of ethylene glycol, a common ingredient of antifreeze that can cause renal failure.

Pure alcohol is often given in treating such cases because it can inhibit the toxic effects of ethylene glycol.

Mackay Base Hospital Dr. Pascal Gelperowicz said the man was given pharmaceutical-grade alcohol when he arrived, but that the hospital’s supplies soon ran out.

“We quickly used all the available vials of 100 per cent alcohol and decided the next best way to get alcohol into the man’s system was by feeding him spirits through a naso gastric tube,” Dr. Gelperowicz said in a statement.

“The patient was drip-fed about three standard drinks an hour for three days in the intensive care unit,” he said. “The hospital’s administrators were also very understanding when we explained our reasons for buying a case of vodka.”

The patient, was believed to have ingested the poison in an attempt at self-harm, made a successful recover. The incident occurred about two months ago, though the hospital just released information on the case.

New Widespread Panic Song References Partying and The South

October 16, 2007

PANIC

In addition to playing an extremely loud and energetic pair of concerts last weekend in Loveland Colorado, Panic has just released a new song titled “Up all Night.” The song features John Bell soulfully describing New Years Day morning having partied all night.

The song has much of what we love about the band: some solid Schools backup, a fun JoJo solo, and continual horns that beg for another Dirty Dozen sitin. The “Georgia Sky” reference might just work for a portion of the fanbase.

The song gives a nice preview of what is to come on the first album release since Jimmy Herring saved the band. If the rest of it follows suit, there just might be something for us all to look forward to come Orange Beach.

You can check out the song here

Could you pull a Radiohead?

October 11, 2007

OK, I figured it was about time for the first (somewhat) serious topic here…

RadioheadRadiohead, shocked the music world by first dumping their record label and then announcing that they planned to make their latest album, “In Rainbows”, available digitally with a “pay what you think it’s worth” pricing model.

Could you make a product or service so satisfying that people would pay enough, voluntarily, to make it a profitable venture? Perhaps, but maybe that’s not the entire point. What Radiohead has done has created so much buzz that the influx of new listeners to the band may make any potential loss pale in comparison. They have also, according to many in the industry, defined the direction the entire music industry is headed. This strategy is big, fast, hot, fresh to your door in 30 minutes or it’s free, big.

Could you create a marketing strategy that would define your industry? Could you do something so big that your peers (not your prospects) would call you crazy? That’s the brilliance behind the Radiohead model.

It’s in the pricing, the package, the guarantee, the delivery, the repackaging, the service, the people, the marketing, it’s hidden, but it’s there. You catch a glimpse of it if you stop trying so hard to be like everyone else in your industry and look for a meaningful way to stand out.
